childbirth and maternity benefits

Miten pääsen Suomen sosiaaliturvaan? Miten saan Kela-kortin? Voinko saada työttömyysturvaa tai perhe-etuuksia? Vaikuttavatko lähtömaan etuudet Kelan etuuksiin? │ How can I become covered by the Finnish social security system? How can I get a Kela card? Can I receive unemployment benefits or family benefits? Do benefits from the country of origin affect the benefits paid by Kela?

I am currently in the process of getting a residence permit (EU blue card), I have an open work contract starting from April 1, 2020 onwards. I am pregnant expected date of delivery is May 31, 2020. I would like to know what coverage I can get. We are expecting to get the permits by February 2020 and so, we are planning to already be in Finland latest by Mar 15, 2020. start date at work is Apr 1, 2020. hope you can help clarify some of my questions below.
1. will cost of childbirth be covered or do I need to do this privately? I checked and it is pretty expensive privately.
2. will i be eligible for the maternity package?
3. will i be eligible for the maternity allowance after giving birth?
Thanks you.

In Finland, pregnancies are monitored at child health clinics which are part of the basic health care arranged by the municipalities. If you have a municipality of residence in Finland, you are normally entitled to child health clinic services and delivery for the municipal residents’ client fee. On situations concerning the municipality of residence you need to be in contact with the register office of Finland on

The maternity package can be awarded to a person who is permanently resident in Finland. If you have moved from another EU or EEA country or from Switzerland to Finland in order to work here you are normally entitled to the maternity package. In such a case you must also be covered by the Finnish social security system.

You become entitled to the maternity allowance once you are 154 days into your pregnancy. You must have been entitled to social security coverage in Finland for at least 180 days immediately before the due date of birth of your child. Periods of insurance spent in other EU/EEA countries, Switzerland or Israel may count towards the 180-day requirement. Please be familiar with our web site offering more important information on parental allowances

It is also necessary to learn about the Finnish social security coverage which needs to be applied by you and then processed by Kela before any of these benefits can be granted. Information available on web page ... to-finland.
